WARDOGS Beta History: Every Test, Date and Player Peak

Search for the WARDOGS beta today and most of what comes back is an access guide for a test that ended weeks ago.

The dates, player counts and even the names of the tests contradict each other from one page to the next.

This WARDOGS beta history puts the whole run in one place, from the February reveal to the Early Access launch, with every number checked against Steam data and Bulkhead’s own posts.

Quick answer: WARDOGS ran three pre-launch tests: a Closed Alpha (August 7-9), Closed Beta 1 (August 21-23) and Closed Beta 2 (September 3-6). Beta 1 drew nearly 500,000 unique players, and Beta 2 peaked at roughly 245,000 concurrent players on Steam.

February 5, 2026: WARDOGS Is Announced

Team17 and Bulkhead revealed WARDOGS on February 5, 2026, billing it as a “Tactical All Out Warfare” FPS.

Team17’s reveal post described one hundred players split across three teams, fighting over a control zone on a destructible battlefield in the derelict industrial mountains of Eastern Europe.

The target from day one was Steam Early Access in 2026, and the reveal already pointed players to a sign-up page for future playtests.

That match format is the thing every later test was built to prove, and what WARDOGS actually is explains how the format plays in the current build.

August 7-9: The Closed Alpha

The first hands-on test was a Closed Alpha from August 7 to 9, and most beta timelines leave it out.

It was invite only, handed out through Bulkhead’s FirstLook programme, which asked players to link community, Steam and Discord accounts and complete a hardware survey.

That route did not carry over to the betas, which ran through Steam directly.

August 7-9: The Closed Alpha

Much of the early weapon and price data circulating before launch came from these test builds, which is why the full weapon tier list is checked against the Season 1 changelog rather than beta-era numbers.

August 21-23: Closed Beta 1

The first Closed Beta was sold as August 21-23, but the servers ran from 17:00 UTC on Friday, August 21, to 02:00 UTC on Monday, August 24.

It was one continuous window rather than timed sessions, so players could log in whenever suited them.

How Access Worked

A $39.99 pre-order guaranteed a place.

Everyone else could press Request Access on the Steam page for a free chance at an invite, with extra accounts added in waves while Bulkhead watched how the servers scaled.

The build ran as a separate WARDOGS Playtest app in Steam libraries, not as the main game.

How Many People Played Beta 1

Game director Howard Philpott said in the studio’s beta debrief that nearly half a million unique players tried WARDOGS that weekend, as PC Gamer reported.

The Steam peak landed at 105,774 concurrent players on August 23, according to SteamDB’s chart for the Playtest app.

PC Gamer noted that this was more simultaneous players than Squad, Hell Let Loose or Arma has ever recorded on PC.

It happened the same week as a Call of Duty beta and a major Battlefield 6 update, and the game had passed one million Steam wishlists shortly before.

The Compound Bow debate started in this window too, and the Compound Bow breakdown covers what the closed beta showed about it.

September 3-6: Closed Beta 2

Closed Beta 2 was announced on September 1 and tied to The FPS Games Show on September 3.

The show started at 18:00 UTC, and a revised schedule opened the servers an hour later at 19:00 UTC, running through to 08:00 UTC on Sunday, September 6.

September 3-6: Closed Beta 2

The September 2 Firing Range Test

The day before the beta, Bulkhead opened the Firing Range early and asked players to help stress its login queue and backend systems.

This is where the “server slam” label some players use comes from.

Bulkhead’s official name for the main test was always Closed Beta 02, not a Server Slam.

Why Bulkhead Chose Waves Over an Open Beta

Bulkhead’s Closed Beta 02 announcement on Steam called the test a genuine scale test and told players to break its systems.

It answered the open-beta question directly: to validate stability properly, the studio would add Steam Playtest invitees in waves rather than open the doors all at once.

The goal was to watch individual systems fail one at a time instead of flooding everything on the first hour.

The September 5 Switch to an Open Beta

That plan held for about two days.

On September 5, Bulkhead posted on Steam that the closed beta was now an open beta, inviting anyone on PC to come and break its servers until the scheduled close.

It was not an extension, and the test still ended at 08:00 UTC on September 6.

This was the only fully open test WARDOGS ran before launch.

How Many People Played Beta 2

Beta 2 peaked at roughly 245,000 concurrent players, more than double the first beta.

SteamDB records the Playtest app’s all-time peak as 245,118 on September 5, while trackers that sample Steam’s API on their own schedule logged slightly lower highs that evening.

A separate community tracker reportedly recorded its reading four minutes before Bulkhead’s open-beta post went up, which suggests the closed, waved phase is what set the record rather than the open hour that followed.

Bulkhead has not published a unique-player total for Beta 2.

Beta 1 vs Beta 2 Side by Side

The two betas were built for different jobs.

Beta 1 tested whether people would show up, and Beta 2 tested whether the systems would survive them.

Why the Beta Player Counts Don’t Agree

Search for the Beta 2 peak and you will find 162,000, 203,000, 219,000 and 245,000, often on the same day.

None of them is wrong, but they measure different things.

Daily peaks vs all-time peaks: the lower figures were the highest counts on September 3 and 4, reported before the test had finished climbing.

Sampling time: Steam only reports how many people are playing right now, so every tracker’s “peak” is the highest reading it happened to take.

Different app IDs: both betas ran on the WARDOGS Playtest app (4809930), not the main game (1867240), so any chart of the main game shows nothing for either weekend.

Why the Beta Player Counts Don’t Agree

That is why this article rounds Beta 2 to roughly 245,000 rather than treating one tracker’s reading as the exact number.

What the Beta Data Changed

The betas mostly changed how Bulkhead talked about scale, and what it tested before launch.

What the Beta Data Changed

Planned for 5,000, Got Roughly 245,000

CEO Joe Brammer wrote on X that the studio “planned for 5k players concurrent”, and said the player count would keep falling for months as the hype wore off.

Against a peak of roughly 245,000, that is close to 50 times the load the studio said it had planned around.

Philpott framed the long-term goal separately, describing a sustainable community of 3,000 to 5,000 daily concurrent players, per PC Gamer.

The two figures are often blended together online, but one is a capacity plan and the other is a healthy post-launch floor.

The Systems Beta 2 Was Built to Break

The Beta 2 announcement named the parts of the game that only break at scale: server scaling and browsing, the login queue, Twitch Drops, DLC entitlements and VOIP.

Twitch Drops were on that list for a reason, since community trackers had linked the integration to server trouble at the start of the first beta.

Brammer also explained publicly that throwing 100,000 players at one queue would not tell the studio much, and that it wanted to see what happened when that many people were clicking through the server browser at once.

Server Hosting Before Launch

The day after Beta 2 closed, Bulkhead named QONZER and BisectHosting as its two approved hosting partners and opened pre-orders for dedicated servers ready for launch.

The studio had said earlier that no other host would get the server code at launch.

September 10: Early Access Launch

The testing phase ended on September 10, 2026, when WARDOGS launched in Steam Early Access at $39.99, and the rest of the story, from launch-day queues to sales and Season 1, lives in the WARDOGS Early Access hub.

Key Takeaways

  • WARDOGS ran three pre-launch tests: a Closed Alpha (Aug 7-9), Closed Beta 1 (Aug 21-23) and Closed Beta 2 (Sept 3-6).
  • Beta 1 drew nearly 500,000 unique players and peaked at 105,774 concurrent on Steam.
  • Beta 2 peaked at roughly 245,000 concurrent, with SteamDB recording 245,118.
  • Beta 2 started with invite waves and switched to an open beta on September 5 for its final stretch.
  • “Server Slam” was never an official name; the closest thing was the September 2 Firing Range login-queue test.
  • Bulkhead planned for 5,000 concurrent players, close to 50 times less than the Beta 2 peak.
  • Beta peaks sit on the separate Playtest app, so they never appear on the main game’s Steam chart.

WARDOGS Beta FAQ

How many WARDOGS betas were there?

WARDOGS ran three pre-launch tests, a Closed Alpha from August 7 to 9, Closed Beta 1 from August 21 to 23, and Closed Beta 2 from September 3 to 6, before Early Access launched on September 10.

How many people played the WARDOGS closed beta?

Closed Beta 1 drew nearly 500,000 unique players according to game director Howard Philpott, with a Steam peak of 105,774 concurrent players on August 23. Closed Beta 2 peaked at roughly 245,000 concurrent players.

What was the WARDOGS beta peak player count?

The highest recorded figure was roughly 245,000 concurrent players during Closed Beta 2 on September 5, with SteamDB logging an all-time Playtest peak of 245,118. Some trackers recorded a slightly lower figure that evening, which is why this figure is rounded.

Was there a WARDOGS open beta?

Yes, but only briefly. Closed Beta 2 switched to an open beta on September 5 for its final stretch, after running as a waved, invite-based test since September 3. It closed as scheduled on September 6.

What is the WARDOGS Server Slam?

Server Slam is not an official Bulkhead name. Players use it loosely for the September 2 Firing Range test, when Bulkhead opened the shooting range early and asked players to stress its login queue and backend systems ahead of Closed Beta 2.

Did WARDOGS have a closed alpha before the beta?

Yes. A Closed Alpha ran from August 7 to 9, invite only through Bulkhead’s FirstLook programme, ahead of the two Closed Betas that followed on Steam.

Why did WARDOGS run two closed betas instead of one?

Bulkhead has described Closed Beta 1 as its first large-scale test and Closed Beta 2 as a scale test aimed specifically at backend systems such as server browsing, the login queue, Twitch Drops, DLC entitlements and voice chat.

Did WARDOGS’ beta numbers match what Bulkhead planned for?

No. CEO Joe Brammer said the studio planned for around 5,000 concurrent players, while Closed Beta 2 peaked at roughly 245,000, close to 50 times that figure. Game director Howard Philpott separately described a longer-term goal of 3,000 to 5,000 daily concurrent players once launch hype settles.

Does WARDOGS beta progress carry over to Early Access?

Bulkhead has not promised that beta cash, XP or unlocks carry into Early Access, and the practical assumption among players and fan wikis is that test data resets.

When did WARDOGS launch into Early Access?

WARDOGS launched into Steam Early Access on September 10, 2026, four days after Closed Beta 2 closed.

Why do WARDOGS beta player counts differ between sites?

Beta concurrent figures come from different sampling moments on Steam’s live player-count API, and some sites report a single day’s peak rather than the test’s all-time high, which is why figures such as 162,000, 203,000 and 245,000 all describe the same test at different points.
